A   in Cherry Sunburst typically comes stock with mini-humbuckers. Finding one with full-size humbuckers generally means it is either a "conversion" (where the body was routed to fit larger pickups) or a factory-ordered rarity.
In the early 1970s, it was common for players to route these guitars for full-size humbuckers to achieve the sound of 1950s Les Paul Standards. One of the most famous examples of this specific configuration is
Ace Frehley's 1973 Tobacco Sunburst Deluxe
, which was modified with three full-size humbuckers.

Notable Features of a 1973 Model
  • "Pancake" Body: Constructed from two layers of mahogany with a thin maple "stringer" in between.
  • Three-Piece Neck: A transition era feature, usually made of mahogany in 1973.
  • Headstock Volute: A small reinforcement bump on the back of the headstock designed to prevent breaks.
  • Cherry Sunburst Rarity: While popular, only about 760 of the 5,194 Deluxes shipped in 1973 were in a solid Cherry finish, though Sunburst was more common.
