Keeley Mod Features
The Keeley modifications (often combined as the Ultra and Seeing Eye Mods) replace several of the original unit's parts with premium components and add a mode switch for different tonal options.
- Seeing Eye Mode (SEM): This mode is generally tamer than the Ultra mode, offering improved harmonic overtones and clarity. The "O" in the "TONE" knob is replaced with an LED that pulses with your guitar signal's intensity, acting as part of the clipping circuit for a unique, musical distortion. Reviewers note it can achieve subtle clean channel enhancements and is great for dynamic playing.
- Ultra Mode: This mode provides a fatter, more robust tone designed to emulate the "wall of Marshall amplifiers" sound. It offers more gain, increased volume, and enhanced note definition, making it suitable for harder rock, grunge, and modern metal genres. A toggle switch engages this mode and some versions also include a mid-boost option within this mode.
- Overall Enhancements: The mod significantly improves the original DS-1's shortcomings by smoothing out harsh high frequencies, lowering the noise floor, and providing richer, less fizzy mids.
